Powers/Talents: Edward Elric has two defining characteristics that set him apart from your average Joe. First off is his mastery of Alchemy, the science that is like magic. Ed can perform alchemic transmutations in order to transform a substance into another substance. For example, he could transform scrap iron into gold (although this is forbidden, among certain other things), paper into flower petals, or even a yellow train cart into a tank. He can also do this without the use of a transmutation circle, which is typically required. Secondly, his right arm and left leg are replacement limbs called automail. They are made of metal, which of course means they are of greater strength than regular human limbs. While alchemic transmutations cannot be performed by humans on themselves, due to interfering body functions, Ed is able to transmute his automail limbs in order to give himself an advantage in various situations, including combat, during which he fights with a combination of skilled martial arts and alchemical weapons.
Edward Elric, and his brother Alphonse, lived happily in Risembool with their mother until she fell ill and passed away. Their combined grief and desire to have her alive again prompted them to diligently study alchemy in hopes of finding a way to revive her. Unfortunately, human transmutation was strictly taboo, and for good reason. After much training and finally making an attempt at the revival transmutation, things go horribly wrong. The resulting accident caused Ed to lose his right arm and left leg, and Alphonse to have his soul trapped in an empty suit of armor. This is also when Ed gained the ability to transmute without circles. Realizing their mistake, and vowing not to repeat it, they set off on a new quest to find a way to restore their bodies to normal.
While on the search, the pair met many complicated characters and learned of many strange things. Ed became a State Alchemist, a dog of the military, and was dubbed the Fullmetal Alchemist. They came across tales of the Philosopher’s Stone, which allowed an alchemist to perform any transmutation and break the laws of alchemy, such as Equivalent Exchange. They went off in search of it, of course, and along the way made many horrific discoveries about its nature and the other forces seeking it.
In the end, Ed was successfully able to restore Alphonse to human form, albeit with no memories of their trials and tribulations while he was trapped in the armor. However, Ed had to sacrifice himself in order to do this, being pulled into a mystical gate that threw him into another world. In this alternate world, Ed toiled hard and studied even more in order to find a way back so that he could be by his brother’s side once again. A group working under the Nazis in this world devised a plot to travel to Ed’s original world and steal a power they would use to take over this world. Through his involvement in stopping this plot, he was able to travel back and reunite with Alphonse. Teaming up as only they could, they were able to save both worlds, and ended up together in the other world. While no longer in their original world, they were happy to finally be together again.
